Per corpus mentemque ad Deum –
Through mind and body to God.
Scoil Mhuire began the ‘Run Around Ireland Challenge’ before the Easter break and the challenge will continue for the next three weeks. Each class keeps a daily record of the number of laps they run around the running track. For this challenge, one lap is deemed to represent one kilometer. Charts are on display in the classrooms showing the distance from our school to famous landmarks around the country. The children choose which landmark they can visit using their total laps completed every day. This challenge is a great way for pupils to learn about Ireland’s most famous landmarks and to bring learning outdoors. This challenge also supports the Athletics strand of the PE curriculum and gives pupils the opportunity to develop good running techniques. Scoil Mhuire is working towards renewing our Active School Flag and this challenge is one of the key criteria for achieving that aim.
Our phenomenal Toy Show:
Our very own Lucy Tyrell and Catherine Logan starring in a video about how to make a Sacred Space. Well done to the girls and a big thanks to Liz’s daughter Charlotte Vard for creating the video.
As part of science week, we all made our own catapults. In this video. Jonah and Andrew explain how their catapults work. Then we had a competition to see which pair of children could catch the most aluminum balls fired from their catapult. the winners were Cole and Tadhg. Caoimhe won the challenge for who could fire an aluminum ball the furthest from their catapult.
We did an interesting experiment about air pressure during science week. This experiment looks like a magic trick.
Even though a glass of water is turned upside down, the water inside it does not spill out.
Air has pressure. There is loads of air all around the glass which acts like a force pushing in all directions and this keeps the card on the open end of the glass in place.
Also, there is hardly any air inside the glass because it is full of water. That means there is no air pressure to push the card downwards. So the card stays in place and the water remains in the glass.
At the beginning of the school year, we designed posters to capture our memories of the 2020 Lockdown.
Thanks to Hilary for laminating them for us.
We will keep them as souvenirs of this historic time. Many of the posters have important messages:
All feelings are ok.
Everything we need is inside us.
It`s good to look back and then move forward.
From the 8th of October until the 22nd of October our school took part in the FAI campaign which is aimed at getting rid of racism. The classes watched a video about other students speaking about racism and then made their own posters about the issue. Well done to all the pupils for taking part and their efforts in making the posters.
